The Shadow in the Swamp

Here's my horror short novel about the unknown & paranormal πŸ‘»πŸ›ΈπŸ‘½πŸ•³ I hope you like it ☺️🩷

Dr. Maria Rodriguez, a renowned parapsychologist, stood at the edge of the murky swamp, her eyes scanning the twisted cypress trees. She had spent years investigating the most inexplicable cases, but none had drawn her in like this one.

A local family had reported strange occurrences: disembodied whispers, shadowy figures lurking in the trees, and an unshakeable feeling of being watched. The family had abandoned their home, fleeing from the unknown terror that lurked within.

Maria's team began to set up equipment, hoping to capture evidence of the paranormal activity. As night fell, they settled in, waiting for the darkness to reveal its secrets.

At first, the silence was oppressive, punctuated only by the occasional hooting of owls. But as the hours crept by, the team started to feel an unsettling presence. It began with small things: a faint rustling in the underbrush, an unexplained creaking of the trees.

Then, the whispers started.

At first, they were barely audible, a soft susurration that seemed to come from all directions. But as the night wore on, the whispers grew louder, more urgent. Maria felt a creeping sense of dread as she realized that the voices were not just random sounds – they were trying to communicate.

One of the team members, a young man named Jake, suddenly stumbled to his feet, his eyes wide with terror. "It's coming," he whispered, his voice trembling. "Oh God, it's coming."

As Maria turned to him, a dark shape emerged from the trees. It was tall, imposing, and seemed to absorb the light around it. The whispers grew to a deafening crescendo as the shape began to move closer.

Maria felt a presence wash over her, a cold, clammy sensation that seemed to seep into her very bones. She tried to speak, but her voice was frozen in her throat.

The shape loomed over them, its presence suffocating. And then, everything went black.

When Maria came to, she was lying on the ground, her head throbbing. The team was scattered around her, some of them crying, others staring blankly into space.

As they stumbled back to their cars, Maria realized that they had captured something on their equipment – a voice, low and menacing, speaking a single phrase:

"I am the shadow in the swamp."

Maria knew that she would never be able to erase the memory of that voice, that presence. She had confronted the unknown, and it had left her shaken to her core.

As they drove away from the swamp, Maria couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched, that the shadow was still out there, waiting for them.

And when they finally emerged from the darkness of the swamp, Maria caught a glimpse of something in the rearview mirror – a tall, dark shape, standing just beyond the trees, watching them leave.
