The Devil's Tree: True Crime


The Devil's Tree in Port St. Lucie, Florida, is a place of dark infamy, linked to the heinous crimes of serial killer Gerard John Schaefer. Schaefer, a former Florida law enforcement officer, used his position to lure and murder numerous young women, earning him the distinction of being one of Florida's most prolific serial killers.


Schaefer's crimes were particularly brutal, involving torture, mutilation, and murder. He would often target hitchhikers, using his badge to gain their trust. The Devil's Tree, located in Oak Hammock Park, was a site where Schaefer would tie his victims to the tree, subjecting them to unimaginable horrors.


In 1973, Schaefer was convicted of murdering two teenage girls, Susan Place and Georgia Jessup, whose bodies were found buried beneath the Devil's Tree. However, investigators believe Schaefer was responsible for many more murders, with estimates ranging from 30 to over 100 victims.


The Devil's Tree has become a morbid tourist attraction, with many visitors reporting strange occurrences and sightings. Some believe the tree is haunted by the spirits of Schaefer's victims, while others claim to have experienced strange energy or curses after visiting the site.


Schaefer's twisted legacy continues to fascinate and horrify true crime enthusiasts, serving as a grim reminder of the darkness that can lurk beneath the surface of seemingly ordinary individuals.
